Bascula Success at the Sommelier Wine Awards 2018!
Atlantic Way Albarino 2016 - Silver
Jurijs Nemkovs of Hakkasan Mayfair highlighted this wine’s ‘fresh, juicy, saline style with some wet stone minerality, very ripe fruit and long finish’, with Tatiana Mann of The Vine Eno Gastro Pub noting its ‘beautiful depth, citrus and creamy texture with chalky lemon and pineapple length’.
No Stone Unturned 2015 - Commended
Turret Fields 2015 - Commended
Great new addition to the Bascula range! Our Atlantic Way Albariño.
"The wine hits the right spots. It doesn't have the bubblegum aromatics so typical of many high street versions. Nor the cheap non varietal palate.
After my formal tasting we had it as the first drink of a long evening on election night with friends. It went down really well. Definitely the most popular white."

Bascula GOLD success at the 2017 Sommelier Wine Awards:
La Báscula, The Charge, Tempranillo/Garnacha, 2014, Rioja , Spain - GOLD
Judges singled this out for Gold for its freshness and approachability. 'Elegant with light menthol and a pleasing finish, and very easy to drink,' began Scott Levy of Smith & Wollensky, with team leader Simon Woods also noting 'juicy dark berry and redcurrant aromas, then a lively and ripe palate'. Fellow team leader Annette Scarfe MW praised 'dark cherries and plums, with refreshing acidity and a clean and precise finish - lovely with suckling pig"
Catalan Eagle, Organic, Garnacha, Cariñena & Syrah, Terra Alta, 2014, Catalonia - Commended
Bascula success at the 2016 Sommelier Wine Awards:
La Báscula, The Charge, Tempranillo/Garnacha, 2013, Rioja , Spain - SILVER
'Medium-long with black fruits. Smoky, meaty and voluptuous,' began Chantal Serrano of The Cinnamon Club, while Scott Levy of Smith & Wollensky London noted: 'Bold black fruit, earthy, nutty aromas with sour cherry and menthol, slightly medicinal hints on a dry palate.'
Catalan Eagle, Organic, Garnacha Blanca/Viognier, Terra Alta, 2015, Catalonia - Commended
La Báscula, No Stone Unturned, Garnacha/Cariñena, Terra Alta, 2013, Catalonia - Commended
Ferry port, Santander. The only way is Bascula...
We saw this sign as we were about to board the ferry back home after a fantastic week blending and 1500 miles on the road.
Basucla now stocked in Corkage, the fantastic new independent wine and small plates restaurant in Bath.
We love it when restaurants stock our wine but it's always nice when it's in our home town of Bath! Corkage, the brainchild of restauranter and wine expert Marty Grant and award winning chef Richard Knighting, are now stocking Turret Fields, The Charge Rioja, Heights of the Charge Rueda and No Stone Unturned. We'll be doing a Bascula tasting there in February so watch this space. You can read all about Corkage here.
La Bascula The Charge Rioja 2013 won Silver at The Drinks Business 2015 Rioja Masters! We think this one is just going to get better and better!
GOLD for Bascula!! Our Heights of the Charge 2013 was awarded Gold at the 2015 Sommelier Wine Awards!
La Báscula, Heights of the Charge, Verdejo/Viura 2013 – *Gold
A delightful blend, this shows notable food-matching versatility, resulting in a worthy Gold. The nose of honey and flowers is encased in a little oak, with dry, candied lemon peel and some yellow apple flavours. ‘Very clean and fresh, showing some restraint on the fruit for a well-made, easy wine,’ said Richard Brooks of Caroline Catering, with Gustavo Medina of Rex Whistler Restaurant highlighting: ‘Delicate nose, good concentration of lime and lemon fruit, good value white.’
Bascula honoured twice in the recent Top 100 Wines From Spain (WFS) Awards
La Báscula’s Turret Fields’ Monastrell Syrah 2013 (in Red Wines category) and La Báscula’s Casta Diva’ Moscatel 2013 (in Sweet & Fortified Wines category) were awarded Top 100 honours in the 2015 Wines From Spain (WFS) Awards.
This follows on from last year when we had Catalan Eagle White 2013 and Heights of the Charge 2012 included in this prestigious list.
Evidence that the art of blending Spanish varietals with ‘new world’ insights to create beautifully balanced wine is working a charm!
Catalan Eagle White 2013 in Top 25 Spanish Wines under £25!!
Catalan Eagle Organic Garnacha Blanca and Viognier 2013 has been included in MW Sarah Jane Evans’ “Top 25 Spanish Wines Under £25” in Decanter! It scored an impressive 91 points out of 100 during the tasting. Amazing stuff!

93 POINTS FROM ROBERT PARKER! La Bascula Casta Diva Moscatel 2013 given 93 points by Robert Parker. Happy days!
Here are some of the highlights: "The nose is very intense, with notes of dried roses, orange peel, apricots and honey.... The palate is sweet, light and easy to drink plus a very long and persistent finish..... The best sweet wine producer in Spain?"
No Stone Unturned holding it’s own against the very best…!
The latest addition to our Bascula range, No Stone Unturned Old Vine Garnacha and Carinena, received some great press recently when it was pitched against some of Spain’s best wines. The article about the tasting was recently published in Harpers
Jancis Robinson MW, doyenne of wine writers, was again full of praise for Bascula wines in her “Purple Pages” (jancisrobinson.com):
La Bascula, Catalan Eagle 2011 Terra Alta (30 May 2014 by JR)
Date tasted: 15 May 2014 ¦ Score: 16
When to drink: 2014 to 2017
“Made by Ed Adams MW. 45% Garnacha, 20% Cariñena, 20% Syrah, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. Mixed sandy, limestone, clay. 500-600 m above sea level. 3,000-4,000 vines/ha. Pruning: mixed bush and guyot. Yields 42-56 hl/ha. Vinified in stainless steel. Four weeks with French oak staves. pH 3.5, TA 6.4 g/l, RS <2 g/l. Annual production 25,000 bottles. Organic production.
Ed Adams and Bruce Jack of South Africa are happy to describe this red as ‘slightly rustic’. I found it mineral somehow, full of life and rather transparently attractive. And the oak character comes from staves not barrels. Good effort.”
Bascula success continues at the 2014 Sommelier Wine Awards with some fantastic praise from the judges:
La Báscula, The Charge, Tempranillo/Garnacha, 2010 – Gold
“Well judged and well priced brings La Báscula Gold. Smoke and toast mix alongside wild cherry, cacao and vanilla notes, and flavours of dark fruit and raisins. The palate sports bright fruit, crunchy tannins, elegance and structure. ‘Classic. What the others should have been,’ said Athila Roos of The Arts Club.”
Spain is ‘the most exciting thing happening in European wine right now’ – Sarah Jane Evans MW and senior judge, when commenting on the Decanter World Wine Awards where Bascula had another good showing.
Awards and judges comments below:
Catalan Eagle white 2014 – *Silver
“Apricots and white flowers on the nose with a stoney undertone. Unctuous mouthfeel with a lovely grapefruit lift to the delicate stone fruit, ripe quince and melon. Structured and well-integrated with a spicy, aromatic finish.”
The Charge Rioja 2011 – *Bronze
“Inky aromas show intense red berries and meaty tones. An impressive acidity supports the full, generous palate, giving balance, whilst also suggesting cellaring potential. Appealing.”
Turret Fields 2013 – *Bronze
“Sweet plum aromas, doused in smoky oak and spritz of florals. Energetic smacks of intense berry shows boldly against the firm tannins and tangy acidity, ensuring a bold impression.”
Catalan Eagle red 2013 – *Commended
“Dark blueberry, bramble and currant tones mingle with savoury shade and ripe tannins on the smooth, spicy palate.”
